It’s good to be back for a while after weeks of traveling in five states in our motor coach to visit friends and family.  I was able to play golf with some of my old golf partners and family while my wife shopped with friends and family on the female side.

In getting back to work, one thing really hit me as I was cleaning up messages and reviewing other correspondence.  If you are like me, you are receiving tons of emails everyday leading you to believe, by their heading, that everyone wants to really help you with your internet business.

However, when you get into the messages, what they really want is for you to buy some program, sign up for some course, membership, etc., or some other method to extract your money from you.  What it boils down to is your adding income to their business.

Now of course there are many solid programs and other tools that might help you in growing your business.  But I would like to see more real help to internet business hopefuls that provides helpful information without asking for money up front or in the “back end”.

Of course, the reason we are all in business is to make money.  We could not survive in business if we don’t make sales.  But I think there is more to just selling something for personal gains.  We should also be interested in providing good solid information without asking for something in return. 

There are sites that are strictly for purchasing products, etc.  What I’m referring to are the sites that lead you to believe that they are going to “show you the way to riches”.  However, you must “purchase something” to obtain these riches.

I know it is very competitive on the internet as there are millions of websites screaming “buy something”.  And I know there are informational websites that can provide some insight into doing business on the internet and I think you should make use of these “free” sources as much as possible.

While we hope you will review the programs and resources we offer you to start, improve, and expand your home business, we are going to make a stronger commitment to bring you good business information without any strings attached.

For those of you who did not read my prior comment, here it is again:

Just a quick update on my Viewbar this week.

As stated in last weekend email, this is a very simple But I think it does a good job with it simple functions of showing the path to the various continued enhancements that will come.

As stated earlier, it looks much like Viewbar on the website, though slightly smaller (it is the same size as the windows task bar). I have mine docked on the bottom but it can also be moved to be at the top of the screen. I also tried the four color choices, and I like the default blue.

There are currently 7 search engines in the search field (I already use this to do all my searching as it is the most convenient way to search from my desktop). It has my favorite links as well as tools (calculator and calendar). I was told these tools are just there to show Members that the Viewbar will be a source of functionality (they will get more handy as improvements are made to the Viewbar). I sometimes use the favorite links menu, generally when I do not already have a browser up on my screen.

Since the release of this to Members is the most important topic at AGLOCO right now, here is the update on that:

All the final Viewbar fixes are being implemented today and will be tested all through tomorrow. If they work correctly we should be able to move the download process to the AGLOCO site and your account page. If not, we are going to fix whatever issues remain as quickly as possible – we won’t release a product that won’t work. I will give an update on this again tomorrow.

Also, we are aware of the website not always being available on a worldwide basis. We have been preparing to integrate the Viewbar download with the AGLOCO website. This has caused a balancing problem which our Savvis engineers have been working on for the last two weeks.

Again, your overall patience on the Viewbar release is appreciated. I’ll continue to keep you posted as I hear updates from our Shanghai tech team.

Beginning an internet business can seem like climbing Mt Everest in tennis shoes to some of us.  You have to make a lot of decisions as to what you are going to market, who you are going to market to, how you are going to market your product and/or services, how much you are going to charge, etc. As the old saying goes, A journey begins with the first step, so does starting your business begin with your first step 

Usually, there are basically two types of people that want to start a business, planners and the action personalities.  The planners will create all types of plans forever, but will be hesitant to take the first action step.  Why?  Usually it is due to a fear of failure of their plans. 

The action personality wants to start the business today and to heck with the planning, Let’s just get this business going.  This person may succeed over time, but they most likely will spend a lot of extra money and wasted time in accomplishing success unless they are extremely knowledgeable about their potential customers.

Now to succeed in starting your business, and to hopefully be successful in your business, you must combine these two traits if you are working alone.  If you are partners with someone, made sure you both are not the same type, planners or action personalities.

Planning must be your first step.  I know if you are an action person, this is going to be very hard for you to do.  I speak from experience. It is very hard for me once I get an idea of something I want to do, to stop and plan the steps out.  My attitude is usually, lead, follow, or get out of my way.

However, a good friend of mine by the name of Joe Carbo, who was very successful in the mail order business many years ago (he has since passed away), wrote a very successful book called The Lazy Man’s Way To Riches.  While there were many excellent tips in the book, the one that hit me the hardest was to make your plan as detailed as possible. Now at the time, I was not a stranger to planning as I had already headed up and started three companies for other large corporations. So I had done a lot of planning already. But the tip took me to a more detailed step. 

Just as an example. If you wanted a new car, don’t just wish or plan for a car, but put this information about every detail of the car on paper. The car model, color, body style, every accessory, etc.

Now carry this over to your business planning.  Don’t just say you want to be doing $100,000 in business your first year.  If that is your goal, break your $100,000 down into your goals for the each month, then each week, then a daily average.   AND PUT IT ON PAPER!  Why?  So you can measure your progress.  Now you can establish the same type of planning for all your other needed functions.  Planning who you are going to market to, their gender, age group, ethic group, location, etc. And then continue all of your planning in the same style, being as detailed as you can.

One of the steps, I have taken in planning projects for many, many years, is to develop a daily schedule for accomplishing an end goal.   Let’s say, I was opening a new store location.  I started from the opening day I wanted, and worked backwards to the current time and scheduled every function that needed to be done by a certain day in order to accomplish my goal.  When did planning need to be started, when did site approval need to be done, when did construction need to start, when did every phase of construction need to be completed, when did merchandise need to be ordered and delivered, people hired, etc.

By having this time of detailed plan, I could make quick adjustments if someone wasn’t meeting the schedule. And I was always able to come in on schedule and in all case on or under budget. Why do most construction projects fail to meet their deadlines? Because, in, most cases, while there is a plan, it is not detailed so it can be measured on a daily bases. If you don’t meet your daily goals, you won’t meet your weekly or monthly goals.  And before you know it, you are at the year’s end and guess what, you missed your goal.

So make your planning detailed and then ACT ON IT.  Adjust as you must, and you will accomplish your goals. Once you have done this type of planning a few times, it will become second nature and will relieve a lot of stress and unplanned surprises.

The biggest single issue for business-to-business marketers is
having an effective head generation according to recent studies.

It has been pointed out the eighty percent of marketing expenditures
on lead generation are wasted due to the leads being lost, ignored,
or discarded by sales people. 

Be sure you are dealing reputable companies if you are paying for
email advertising.

Does Your Website Need A “Spring Cleaning”?

Here are some suggestions from Yahoo on reviewing your website(s)
to obtain better results.

Feature seasonal specials. If you offer seasonal products and
services, be sure to feature them on your home page. “Having some
spring merchandise on the front page — either as specials or in the
right column or somewhere above the fold, where people don’t have
to scroll down to see it is a really good idea It shows the site is
fresh and up-to-date.

Clear away the cobwebs.  Adding some fresh content and moving
things around. Even though search engines use spiders, they don’t
like cobwebs. Your site may rank well, but if you don’t
do anything to it for ages, it will fall farther and farther down
in the rankings.
 
Get rid of the junk. This is a good time to review your site
content and get rid of the things that aren’t working for you.
Delete old products that aren’t selling well,

Update product descriptions, and get rid of references to “new”
products that aren’t new any more, and delete or archive outdated
news releases.

Find and repair your links. You can keep your site visitors from
becoming frustrated by dead links by running a monthly link check.
There are link-checking tools [such as W3C Link Checker] that you
can use, which make doing that a lot easier, some can spider and
check your site online, and you don’t even have to buy the tool.

Improve your grammar. Grammatical errors can make your site look
less professional and turn off your visitors. Are you using a good
spell check? This is important, too, More and more, Google’s
algorithm includes spelling and syntax. If you have a lot of poor
English on your site, the search engines might not consider you to
be an authoritative source.

Do your research. Everyone knows that having the right keywords on
your site makes it easier for people to find you. Top keywords are
always changing, It’s important to conduct keyword research and
update your keywords at least once a year.

Freshen your colors. Adding seasonal colors and images is a simple
way to freshen the look of your site.  Choose colors that
complement your brand. There are automated scripts that can change
your websites colors with each season.

Update your dates. If the pages on your site include “last updated”
footnotes, make sure they are as current as possible.

And here are some suggestions for making your content and images
more accessible for visitors:

Break it up. Your site content should be easily to scan. Edit your
page content and incorporate lots of white space. Break it up into
easily scanned “chunks,” so it’s more readable.

Speed things up. More Internet visitors now have high-speed
broadband connections, so it’s less of an issue than in the past.
However, it’s still important to make sure that your web pages are
quick to load. Tools such as NetMechanic can help you compress
large graphics to speed up page loading.

So, start your spring season with a complete cleanup. You’ll
benefit with better search rankings, happier customers, and more

Here is the latest update from Brian regarding Agloco coming online this month.

Before I talk about Apple, let me give you today’s Viewbar update. As mentioned previously, our delaying item is getting our partners ad servers to talk correctly to the Viewbar. It requires programming on both their servers and our Viewbar to integrate correctly – not as simple as just signing up for Google AdSense. After that is solved the Viewbar download area will need to be transferred from our test servers to our main site to handle the volume, where we will test it again (when this occurs our main site will be down, but we will give a warning before that occurs). Until the glitches in the ad server integration are solved I cannot give a more accurate release date than days away.

As to Apple, here was the update from the newswire.

April 12, 2007 (IDG News Service)  Apple Inc. said today it won’t release Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, the next version of its operating system, by mid-June as planned, blaming the delay on the iPhone.

I noted that Apple announced a four month delay of their new operating system (just two months from when it was scheduled to be released). Apple is not a startup. People are currently relying on the Mac and developers have been building new applications for Leopard. I’m not critical of Apple (especially being a mac user myself)  I just wanted to use this latest example of how hard it is to get software release dates known and accurate (even for 30 year companies releasing a new version of a product which is 20 years old).

Your overall patience on the Viewbar release is appreciated. Trust me when I say that your desire to see it released is matched, if not exceeded, by the Shanghai tech team and all of the AGLOCO Development team.
